The Iced Latte is the perfect espresso drink to cool down with on a hot summers day, it is a delicious combination of ice cold milk and rich, strong espresso. Read on to find out a little more about one of my personal favourite cold drinks.
Iced Latte - Drink of the Week
An iced latte is a simple and straight forward cold espresso based drink, not to be confused with an iced coffee. Iced coffee tend to be sweetened, not overly strong, topped with ice cream and possibly even whipped cream. The iced latte on the other hand is the polar opposite, the strength of espresso means this is not a drink for someone who takes their coffee 1/2 strength, nor is it designed for someone who is looking to cure that sugar craving.
That's right this is pure coffee and milk goodness, something that I find perfect for that coffee hit at around 3pm on a summers afternoon.
So - How's it Made?
The recipe for an Iced Latte doesn't get much simpler - you will need:
- Cafe Style glass (resistant to heat)
- Double shot of Espresso
- Ice
- Milk
Begin by filling your glass about 1/2 to 2/3 full with ice.
Fill the glass with your choice of milk, the amount of milk required would be enough to cover the ice or just above.
Now you're ready to prepare the espresso, pull a full double espresso shot as you would normally do to prepare a hot drink. If you don't have access to an espresso machine, you could use a stovetop espresso if you wish. However this drink must use espresso - a plunger or drip preparation will not give the same results.
From here you are almost done, simply pour your espresso over your ice and milk, the first time you make this you may like to add the espresso in smaller quantities and give it a try until you achieve the strength of coffee you desire.
After adding the espresso, simply give it all a stir and enjoy! If you do wish to sweeten the drink at all, simply add sugar or your desired sweetener to the hot espresso before you pour it over the milk. Something else that you may wish to try is adding some vanilla extract to the milk and a little sugar to the espresso for a nice twist on the iced latte.
So next time your in the mood for a nice strong coffee, but the thought of a hot drink is just too much. Give an iced latte a try, we would love to hear your thoughts and opinions as well as any variations on the drink that you come up with in the comments!!
